Identity of Finsbury Park mosque suspect revealed

Darren Osborne, 47-year-old father living in Cardiff, is now being held on suspicion of terrorism offences, says Scotland Yard

Londoners bearing flowers and messages of solidarity gather for a vigil near the mosque where a man ploughed a van into Muslims leaving prayers

The suspect behind the Finsbury Park mosque attack was named on Monday as Darren Osborne, a 47-year-old married father of four, living in Cardiff.

Osborne was arrested after a van rammed a crowd outside the north London mosque at about 12.20am on Monday. Ten people were injured, and an elderly man who suffered a heart attack died.

Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle had shouted “I want to kill all Muslims” and “this is for London Bridge,” before he was restrained.

Mohammed Mahmoud (C), an Imam at Finsbury Park Mosque, gives a statement to the media at a police cordon in the Finsbury Park area of north London on 19 June

Osborne was initially arrested by police on suspicion of attempted murder. He is now being held on suspicion of terror offences, Scotland Yard said.

Police were on Monday searching an address in a cul-de-sac close to Cardiff golf club in the northeast of the city suburbs.

According to UK security minister Ben Wallace, Osborne was not known to the government, reported the Guardian.

“What I can say on this case is this individual, so far as we know at the moment, was not known to us, but we are aware of a rise in the far right,” said Wallace.

Met police commissioner Cressida Dick said the suspect targeted Muslim worshippers.

“This was quite clearly an attack on Muslims who looked like they were probably Muslims and they were coming from a prayer meeting,” said Dick.

“We treat this as a terrorist attack and we in the Met are as shocked as anybody in this local community or across the country at what has happened.”

The suspect’s mother expressed shock at knowing that her son was behind the attack. She described Osborne as a “complex” person, in an interview with ITV News.

“I’m not going to defend him, but he’s my son and it’s a terrible, terrible shock,” she said. “It’s not just robbing a bank, it’s an atrocity. And at this moment in time, I can’t cope with it, I can’t. I don’t want to say anything more.”

The suspect has been described by neighbours as “aggressive”. The weekend before the tragedy, he called the 12-year-old son of his Muslim neighbours “in-bred,” the Guardian reported.

The Met police said in a statement: “At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that the suspect acted alone but we are of course investigating all the circumstances leading up to the attack.”

Local youths told Middle East Eye they were forced to restrain the alleged attacker themselves for between 10 and 20 minutes. Ahmed Hajji, a 23-year-old local to Finsbury Park, said: “The police arrived late, which forced us to do a citizen’s arrest of the man so he would not get away.

“Local youths, who are always demonised in this area, were the ones that saved the day.”

Abdi, another local who wanted to be identified only by his first name, said the attacker shouted “this is for London Bridge” – a reference to an attack by three men earlier this month. The man added “Just kill me, just kill me” as he was taken away by police, Abdi said.

Osborne was protected by an imam at the mosque, Mohammed Mahmoud.

“There was a mob attempt to hurt him, so we pushed people away from him until he was safely taken by police,” Mahmoud said. He waved to onlookers from the back of the police van as he was led away.

Apple tells court Qualcomm chip licenses are invalid

Apple Inc broadened a legal attack on Qualcomm Inc, arguing to a U.S. federal court that license agreements that secure the chip maker a cut of every iPhone manufactured were invalid.

If successful, Apple’s attack would undermine a core tenet of Qualcomm’s business model.

Apple sued San Diego-based Qualcomm in January, saying the chip maker improperly withheld $1 billion in rebates because Apple helped Korean regulators investigate Qualcomm.

Apple’s initial lawsuit was a relatively narrow one focused on whether it violated a contract with Qualcomm by helping regulators that were investigating Qualcomm’s business practices. But the new filing expands Apple’s claims and seeks to stop Qualcomm’s longstanding business model using a legal theory based on a ruling last month.

The U.S. Supreme Court made it harder for manufacturers and drug companies to control how their products are used or resold, ruling in May against printer company Lexmark International Inc in a patent dispute over another company’s resale of its used ink cartridges.

In a Tuesday brief seen by Reuters, Apple took aim at Qualcomm’s practice of requiring customers to sign patent license agreements before purchasing chips, known in the industry as “no license, no chips”.

The license allows Qualcomm to take a percentage of the overall selling price for iPhone in exchange for supplying the modem chips that let phones connect to cellular data networks.

Apple argued that the ruling involving Lexmark showed that Qualcomm was entitled to only “one reward” for its intellectual property and products.

Qualcomm should be allowed to charge for either a patent license or a chip, but not both, Apple argued.

Apple wants to be able to buy chips without signing the license agreement that forces it to pay a part of the overall iPhone sale price.

Apple also asked the court to stop lawsuits that Qualcomm had filed against Foxconn Technology Group and three other contract makers that assemble the iPhone on Apple’s behalf and are the formal buyers of Qualcomm’s chip, as is standard in the electronics industry.

Apple argued that the court fight should be between Apple and Qualcomm.

Sale of Cocoa fertilizers: NDC Minority economical with the truth – COCOBOD

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has accused the NDC Minority in Parliament of being economical with the truth, over the purchase of 2.2 million bags of granular fertilizer and 1.6million litres of liquid for cocoa farmers by the Mahama led-government.

According to COCOBOD though the previous administration factored the purchase of fertilizers, it spent a whopping GHC 750 milion on the construction of cocoa roads when it had budgeted for on GHC 150 million, a situation that has resulted in debt with no provision made to settle it.

The Minority is accusing the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government of cheating cocoa farmers by asking them to buy fertilizers which have already been paid for by the previous NDC government.

According to them, the Mahama administration prior to the determination of the producer price of cocoa made provision for the purchase of 2.2 million bags of granular fertilizer and 1.6million litres of liquid fertilizer to fertilize over 1million hectares of cocoa farms free of charge to the farmer in the 2016/2017 cocoa season.

Addressing journalists at a news conference in Accra over the issue, the Ranking Member on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Hon Eric Opoku, said it baffles their imagination why the government will turn around to sell the already paid for fertilizers to the cocoa farmer.

The NPP government has replaced the free fertilization program introduced by the previous NDC government with a program under which farmers pay GH¢80.00 for a bag of fertilizer.

With the new program, a cocoa farmer who has 100 hectares of cocoa farm and was therefore entitled to 750 bags (7.5 bags of granular fertilizer per hectare) is expected to pay GH¢60,000 for the same 750 bags of fertilizer.

This the Minority NDC considers is a slap in the face of the cocoa farmers.

But speaking to Kasapa News, Fiifi Boafo, the Executive Assistant to the COCOBOD Chief Executive, explained that COCOBOD’s decision to sell fertilizers to farmers at reduced price is partly to enable it offset debt accrued by the previous administration.

He noted that this initiative, is meant to bring to an end the smuggling of subsidized fertilizers to neighboring west African countries including Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

Now, the Licensed Buying Companies sell the fertilizers and they’ll later come back and render accounts to COCOBOD as to whom they sold the fertlizers to. This is a clear departure from the earlier way of doing things. By this measure, fertilizers will no longer get into the hands of constituency chairmen and also be smuggled to other countries as has been the case in the past years.”

I’ve not been served with any court order – Woyome

The Office of businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome has stated he[Woyome] has not been served with a Supreme court order for his impending oral examination on June 29.

In a latest judgment delivered on June 19, 2017, the Supreme court ordered that all shares held by Mr. Woyome in some 11 companies should be charged temporarily pending the June, 29 hearing.

The court granted an application for the Attorney General’s Department to orally examine the businessman on the means and capacity to pay the over GHS51 million judgment debt to the state.

“Let the judgment/debtor, Alfred Agbesi Woyome be served with a copy of the Order as drawn up with a hearing notice to appear before this court on Thursday, 29th June 2017 to be examined…” the Court said.

But the personal assistant to the embattled businessman, Reginald Dogbe disclosed in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM that Mr. Woyome is yet to be served.

He said if issues remain the same without his boss being served with the court order, there would be no grounds for him appearing in court on the said date.

“I can say on authority that we’ve never received any suit as of yesterday…when you are not served for what purpose are you going to court?” he questioned.

Supreme Court declares GITMO 2 stay in Ghana as illegal

The Supreme Court has declared as unconstitutional the Government of Ghana agreement with the US government that saw two ex-GITMO detainees brought into the country.

The court has ordered the government to within the next three months send the agreement to parliament for ratification or in lieu of that decision return the two detainees to the US.

Margaret Bamful and Henry Nana Boakye last year sued the Attorney General and Minister of Justice as well as the Minister of Interior, accusing government of illegally bringing in the two former Gitmo detainees, without recourse to the laws of the land.

The two plaintiffs were therefore seeking a true and proper interpretation of Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. The applicants claim that the President of the Republic of Ghana acted unconstitutionally by agreeing to the transfer of Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby to Ghana.

Two Guantanamo bay detainees, Atef and Al-Dhuby had been in detention for 14 years by the United States after being linked with the terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo reading the judgment said the president of Ghana by agreeing to the transfer of the two Guantanamo bay detainees required ratification by parliament with a vote of more than half, hence pronounced as unconstitutional the said agreement.

5 Signs your relationship is going nowhere

$
0
0

When you really like someone, sometimes you can’t help but constantly look for signs he or she is into you.

However, all too often, your excitement can start to cloud your judgement, making you believe you’re in a relationship when you’re really not.

Emotions take over, and before you know it, you’re planning your wedding and you haven’t even been on a formal date. Are you disillusioned, or are you and your love interest working on something real?
Here are five signs you’re in a fantasy relationship, and why it’s a problem.

• You don’t have a title: When things start to get serious, the natural next step is to define the relationship. This involves getting a title. You’re a girlfriend or a boyfriend, a significant other, or a partner, for example.

If you are none of these things, and you’re just “hanging out,” you’re in a fantasy relationship. Chances are, nothing will come out of this union. Without a title, you’re a random distraction. You’re just for fun.

Why this is a problem
Generally, no title means no commitment. If the person you’re interested in hasn’t titled you, then he or she is off the hook when it comes to stepping up to the plate and putting in effort.
Your love interest is free to date other people, hang out with friends whenever the mood hits, or suddenly pick up and move to another country. You have no say in the matter because, let’s face it, you don’t really matter all that much at this point.

• You’re always the one calling and texting: Do you always call and text first? If you stopped texting and calling for a couple of days, what would happen?

If you try this and notice that the person you’re interested in hasn’t tried to contact you to see how you’re doing, you’ve got your answer. Sorry to break it to you, but you’re in a relationship with yourself.
Why this is a problem

A real relationship is a two-way street. Communication requires the participation of two people, so if you’re the only one doing the communicating, there’s not much of a relationship happening.

You’re better off spending time with someone who both looks forward to and initiates some of your interactions. A one-sided relationship doesn’t have staying power.

• His or her friends don’t know about you: A secret love affair might be exciting at first, but it can get old pretty fast. If you and your “friend” bump into an acquaintance, are you introduced or are you left standing in the corner, waiting for the conversation to end?

If it’s the latter, you’re not in a relationship or you are, but your partner is cheating and doesn’t want to get caught.

Why this is a problem
Those who are involved in a special relationship will usually be so excited about it that they’ll tell all their close friends and family. And when they happen to see an acquaintance, they’ll jump at the opportunity to make introductions. However, if you don’t hold a special place in someone’s heart, you’ll either get a brief mention or you won’t get introduced at all.

• You’re the only one investing time and energy: You might think just because you’re spending time together, things will eventually progress toward an official relationship.

But you’re most likely wasting your time with someone who doesn’t notice or care how much effort you’re putting forth. Continuing this behaviour will take you away from the people who really deserve your time and attention.

Why this is a problem
You can’t get your time back. All the emotional investment you’re putting into a non-relationship will drain you and leave you too tired to do other things that require your full attention. Save your time and energy for someone who cares.

• You’re ghosted: Alas, once you think there might be hope for you and your fantasy love, he or she disappears. No phone calls, no texts, no good-bye — nothing.

Anyone can be ghosted, but it’s more likely to happen between people in a situation where one person’s definition of the relationship is wildly different than the other’s.

Once this person realises you misinterpreted the status of the relationship, he or she will start to become distant in an attempt to pump the breaks on an unwanted relationship.

Why this is a problem
Ghosting is always a problem, not only because it’s rude, but also because it leaves so many questions unanswered. It’s a cowardly way to end a relationship. All you can do in this situation is learn to let go. Don’t try to run after the person and prove you’re worthy.

You don’t have to like what we stand for, but you have to respect us- Lydia Forson on why Feminism is important

Barely a day after popular comedian DKB’s Instagram rant against feminists, it looks the storm he stirred up is just about getting even more interesting.
Star actress Lydia Forson, who is strongly vocal about her feminist ideals, has penned a letter to all feminists.
While it is not explicitly indicated that the letter is in response to DKB’s post, Lydia seems to have found a need to write this letter explaining to all, who feminists are and why they are important In her letter, Lydia asks feminists to pay no heed to persons who attack them without prior knowledge or understanding of what the feminist movement stands for. She explained that feminism is not about man-hating or a cry against marriage and motherhood, as many feminists are married with children, naming Ghanaian author Malaka Grant and Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie as among strong feminists who are married and are mothers. She further explained that feminism is not just about women, but about men as well as it is a fight for gender equality, and the right for people to decide for themselves what they can and cannot do with their bodies or lives. Below is her full letter: Dear Feminist, Let’s not fight those who don’t get us; especially those who continue to promote the stereotype that has followed the movement for years because of the actions of some and the misconception of others. Instead let’s try to educate them, seeing that a lot of them don’t seem to know any better or what the word feminism even means. If that doesn’t work IGNORE and save your energy for a fight that’s really worth it.
But here’s a little education for those needing it.
1. We don’t hate men, we just don’t like the abusive, oppressive and chauvinist type; we also don’t believe our world “should” revolve around them if we don’t want it to. (Honey if you want your world to revolve around your man, go right ahead knowing you did it by CHOICE).
2. We don’t hate marriage, we just don’t believe it’s a MUST for every woman, or there’s a timeline for when you should just to please society.
3. A lot of feminist are married and even stay at home wives. Author Malaka Grant is a wonderful mother of 4 a stay at home mom and one of the strongest feminist I know. Famed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is equally married with a child. My sis Hajia-Xalia Qassim is equally a mother, wife and a strong feminist. **So where’s the proof that feminist hate marriage or never marry.
4. Feminism isn’t a word limited to only women, but men too. Because it’s all about the fight for equality irrespective of gender; if you’re a man and you believe this, you’re a feminist. 5. Feminism has no age, class or “look”. How you dress, the job you do, your lifestyle etc doesn’t determine if you’re more or less of a feminist. You can wear a mini skirt, a hijab or dress like a tomboy and still be a feminist. Ultimately it’s about having the right to have a say in how we live our lives, what we do with our bodies etc regardless of how you may feel about it. You don’t have to LIKE what we stand for, but you have to respect our right to do so. On that note; listen ain’t no body got time to be fighting battles that will only exhaust and drain us, if you don’t want to be educated we’ll take a back seat, get some popcorn and watch you entertain us with your ignorance.

Ghana-China partnership set to bear more fruits

Trade between Ghana and China, its largest trading partner, amounted to US$ 5.976 billion in 2016.

The trade volume between the two countries in the first quarter of this year reached nearly US$1.4 billion.

Madam Sun Baohong, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview, which sought to assess the strength of the long-standing relations in view of recent developments and the prospects for future cooperation.

According to statistics by Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, China’s investment in Ghana reached US$ 323 million in 2016; with 36 new investment projects.

The number of projects ranked first in Ghana’s foreign capital sources.

Madam Sun said the bond was even poised to see more fruits with the opportunities offered under the major development plans earmarked by the Government, such as the “One – District, One Factory and “Planting for Food and Jobs”.

As the requisite experts on both sides are engaging to work out the specifics for collaboration, Madam Sun expressed optimism to achieve a win-win outcome, saying:  “We will strengthen policy connectivity with the Ghanaian side, make full use of each other’s advantages, and promote cooperation in infrastructure, capacity building, manufacturing and agriculture.”

China, which has been a very close and faithful ally of Ghana since independence, she assured would solidly and steadily make greater contribution to the economic restructuring and industralisation of the country.

In furtherance of this, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is in China on Tuesday, June 20, for a high level- official visit expected to expand the scope of exchanges at the governmental level and that of the people to people to boost the socio economic and cultural ties.

During the five-day visit, which is at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Li Yuanchao, Dr Bawumia would meet Chinese leaders and leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and discuss bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest

The visit would be the first by a high-level government official to China since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took office in January, this year.

Throwing more light on China’s commitment to support Ghana to improve the well-being of her people, Madam Sun said the grant project by the Chinese Government to build 1000 boreholes was 80% completed.

Additionally, the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) would soon receive a batch of agricultural machinery to support its work towards of improving the livelihoods of those in the poorest zone of the country.

On how “The Belt and Road Initiative”, China’s present Kingpin programme, would benefit Ghana, Madam Sun said it was very much in line with the aim and ideas of China-Ghana and China-Africa cooperation.

“The major social and economic development plans of the NPP Government are highly consistent with the Belt and Road Initiative as well as the relevant content of China-Africa Ten Cooperation Plans under the framework of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation,” she explained.

“Ghana, with its political stability, open market, rich resources and abundant labour forces, has all along been a model for development and openness in West Africa,”

In conducting China-Ghana cooperation, Madam Sun stated that, China would continue to carry out the Silk Road spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning, mutual benefit and win-win results.

China, she said, would also adhere to the principles of sincerity, practical results, affinity and good faith and uphold the values of friendship, justice and shared interests.

The Belt and Road Initiative was first announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013.

By borrowing the historic symbol of ancient Silk Road, the Belt and Road Initiative has been given a new connotation of era, which is to maintain the open world economic system and to promote global peace, cooperation and common development.

The Belt and Road Initiative thus aims at strengthening policy, infrastructure, trade, financial and people-to-people connectivity to promote free flow of economic elements, efficient allocation of resources and deep integration of markets of countries along the line.

These are to create an open, inclusive, balanced and favorable regional economic cooperation framework for all parties.

From 2014 to 2016, the trade volume between China and countries along the line exceeded US$3 trillion, and China’s cumulative investment in the countries along the line exceeded US$50 billion.

Chinese enterprises have built 56 overseas economic and trade cooperation zones in more than 20 countries, creating nearly US$1.1 billion revenue and 180,000 jobs for the countries concerned.

China has over the years, made significant contribution to Ghana’s economic and social development of Ghana by investing and financing projects such as the Bui Dam, Sunon Asogli Power Plant, natural gas infrastructure, telecommunications backbone networks and distance education projects.

It has also undertaken water supply projects, supported the Africa World Airlines (AWA) and is undertaking multiple grant projects in Ghana, bringing tangible benefits to people of both countries.

Bankers advocate tiered capital for banks

$
0

The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB), has advised the Bank of Ghana (BoG) not to announce a uniform capital requirement for the banking sector but create a tier system that can cater to the needs of the various banks

The CIB said in order to ensure that the gains of capitalisation were fully harnessed, the BoG should consider a tiered recapitalisation policy, that inures to the needs of the various banks.

That, it said, would help the banks to serve and specialise in other sectors of the economy, especially the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The CIB made its position known in a set of recommendations, made by its President, Reverend Mrs Patricia Sappor, to the BoG.

Ample time

The CIB added that the central bank should give the banks ample time to explore ways of meeting the new capital requirements stressing that in view of the fact that recapitalization of banks could take place at any time, probably, every four to five years, the banks ought to take a long-term view of the economy and the banking industry and prepare for their capitalisation plans ahead of time.

Banks, Rev. Mrs Sappor advised, should continue to strengthen their balance sheets over the next couple of years to enhance the pace of value creation in the interest of shareholders so that shareholders would be ready to invest more in their respective banks.

“Lower tiered banks must be assisted with a clear policy so that they are not left out of the banking system. A policy to stagger bank capitalisation in terms of the types of banks and their corresponding target markets is critical, timely and reasonable,” she posited.

Another way of looking at bank capitalisation, she added, was the segmentation of banks to allow lower tiered banks that had met the initial threshold to serve particular sectors of the economy with innovative products and services while banks with increased capital base, that is higher tiered banks, financed bigger projects.

It is the position of the CIB that such an approach would help the country to have a banking sector that supported small, medium size and large banks that were all playing various roles in the economy.

Sustaining momentum

“There is the need to sustain Ghana’s strong, reliable, competitive and healthy banking sector that forms part of the global financial system. Notwithstanding, there should be an all-inclusive banking system where banks would be segmented and empowered to support the retail market in Ghana, particularly in the financing of SMEs,” the CIB maintained.

It added that it was significant for key stakeholders in the banking sector to debate on these issues and reach a consensus as to where to place lower tiered banks within the whole recapitalisation drive.

“The institute believes that recapitalisation is a step in the right direction for the Ghanaian banking sector. What remains is the approach and methodology to be used by the regulator to achieve this objective.”

“It is our conviction that the BoG will maintain and review the capitalisation policy from time to time as has been the practice to revitalise and stabilise the banking sector,” the CIB posited.

It, therefore, called on the central bank to implement the capitalisation policy by strengthening all banks to put mechanisms in place for shoring up their capital to an acceptable level.

Beyond that point, it said, banks which would like to recapitalise to take advantage of the big ticket oil and gas sector ought to increase their capital base in relation to the size of the projects to be financed and that such a policy would go a long way to create a fair and competitive ground for all classes of banks in the country.

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has upgraded its information technology (IT) infrastructure aimed at making banking convenient for its customers while improving efficiency.

The upgrade is supported by leading cutting-edge technology which, the bank says, has excess capacity to deliver the very best banking experience to its customers.

“This technology has the capability that has immensely reduced the waiting and transaction times across all service channels,” ADB said in a release in Accra.

In addition, it said, the security architecture of the bank’s systems and applications had also been bolstered with world- class firewalls to provide the most secure banking experience to the customer.

“The user experience on the new platform is very friendly, less cumbersome and more efficient in performing transactions as compared to the former,” it said.

The new system has cut the several navigation menus and screens required to perform a single transaction, resulting in reduced turn-around and waiting times to increase customer satisfaction.

But the successful completion of the upgrade has seen the introduction of additional functionality to perform more advanced transactions. That included mobile and internet banking platforms that had become more responsive, supported by a more visually appealing user interface to deliver more flexibility, speed and value to the customer.

Best bank in three years

The release said since joining the bank last year, the Managing Director, Mr Daniel Asiedu, had led a new transformation agenda for the bank to become more customer-driven.

“Mr Asiedu’s vision is to make ADB the best bank in Ghana within the next three years and this he hopes to make possible through the use of modern technologies and tailor-made products. This upgrade is one of such key initiatives towards achieving that vision,” the statement said.

“Of course, customers are assured of their security as the platforms are also armed with a robust enterprise-grade security feature to further protect the customer from theft and fraud,” it said, adding that the upgrade of the bank’s core banking platforms would enhance the user-experience for customers using the bank’s mobile app, Visa Cards, Internet banking and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) services

President of Bursaspor has confirmed he will not be chasing Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan after failing to agree personal terms with the player.

According to President Ali Ay who has never hidden his admiration for the hard working Ghanaian forward- the club has decided to move on to other targets after weeks of back and forth.

Speaking at the signing ceremony for French technical man Paul Le Guen, President Ali Ay said they have given up on signing the Shanghai SIPG man.

“Two managers of Asamoah Gyan are speaking on the right-hand side. They probably want to make a PR themselves,” He said

“ Other people came in. Other people came in. I know people who know me .. I do not like Çerçöp business .”

“I am finished with the Gyan job .. After that, we do not care about Gyan. They cannot go in from the door after that .”

“Its unfortunate that Bursa is talking about such things too much these days but I wish it was the other way round.”

Gyan without a doubt is one of the greatest strikers from Africa and recently scored his 50th goal for the Black Stars.

GITMO 2 SC Ruling: Govt to swiftly address consequential orders

The Akufo Addo led-government has said it will take prompt steps to address the consequential orders of the Supreme Court after it declared unconstitutional the Government of Ghana agreement with the US government that saw two ex-GITMO detainees brought into the country.

The court on Thursday ordered the government to within the next three months send the agreement to Parliament for ratification or in lieu of that decision return the two detainees to the US.

In a press statement signed by the Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid, government assured the nation that “the ex detainees who have been comporting themselves well since their arrival in Ghana, continue to be under the supervision of the security agencies. Government is going to take prompt steps to address the consequential orders.”

In the meantime, government is calling for calm among the populace on this matter.

NACOB awarded half of money found in Nayele’s account

The Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) has received half of the money found in the bank account of jailed Ghanaian/Austrian drug queen Nayele Ametefe.

The other half of the money will go to the court and the consolidated fund.

Deputy Executive Director of NACOB Micael Addo this in an interview with Joy FM stated that following Nayele’s arrest her accounts were seized and the monies in them confiscated to the state.

They were five different accounts, some of the monies were insignificant and the court decides how to do the sharing. Part of it is given to NACOB to continue with the work we’re doing…the sharing is done in percentage terms. Fifty percent was given to NACOB, thirty percent went to the court and twenty percent was put into the consolidate fund.”

Nayele Ametefe was arrested at Heathrow Airport in 2014 with 12kg of cocaine worth $5 million in her hand luggage and has since been handed an eight-year jail term by the Isleworth Crown Court in the UK.

On Wednesday, NACOB donated shop items belonging to Nayele Ametefe and other drug barons to three rehab centres in Ghana.

NACOB made the donation as part of the 2017 World Drugs Day Celebration following a court ruling that the assets should be confiscated.

The presentation was done at the NACOB Headquarters on Wednesday 21st June, 2017.

The beneficiaries were the Addictive Diseases Unit, Drug and Alcohol Free Rehabilitation Centers and House of Saint Francis Rehabilitation center.

Joe Mettle and His Team Must Sit Up

$

The reigning Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) ‘Artiste of the Year’ is Joe Oscar Mettle and nobody can alter that fact, regardless of the little cynicism that greeted his history-making win, but unfortunately, the artist is doing very little to depict the command of an ‘Artist of the Year’.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with his artistry but there’s everything wrong with his brand positioning. His nationwide appeal is not encouraging, his marketing drive is weak, his social media presence is overly disappointing and his publicity/PR machinery is shambolic.

It’s been months since winning the ultimate, but it seems Joe Mettle needs a jolt, maybe the same light that struck Saul on his journey to Damascus for him to realise the enormous task and responsibility that rest on his shoulders.

Believe or trash it; the fact is winning the VGMA Artiste of the Year comes with expectations and it does not matter whether you are a Highlife artist, Hip Hop or Borborbor artiste you get judged by the same measure!

Let me humbly remind Joe if he still has not got a grasp of what that title signifies. It means he is the ‘Artiste of the Year’ for Ghanaian music; he is the overlord and champion of all genres of Ghanaian music. He is the reigning king of Ghanaian music, and he must start living up to that billing.

That lukewarm approach and the feeling of contentment he exhibited in the gospel domain must change. He must prove to everybody, especially the naysayers that, his win was no fluke, but he can’t do that, when he decides to release songs and tell of his plans and projects to only his friends.

For the sake of his brand, he must be seen to be dominating Ghanaian music and transcending the shores of Ghana – striking international collaborations and hoisting Ghanaian gospel music flag.

Right after his win, Joe released what was called the victory single, Yedi Nkunim, a very good song, but unfortunately, its play was short-lived and its promotion was handled haphazardly.

Nothing stopped the artiste, who was still getting traction for his historic win from premiering it on 10 radio stations across the country and ensuring that the song became No.1 on the charts. No music video was shot for the song and it never made it to the charts. But wait, it is popular within the urban/ contemporary gospel circles, of course!

None of his songs is making any impact after his VGMA win and that is not good enough and what is even more gutting is the fact that, he is yet to shoot any music videos to any song after that.

There’s simple no aggression in his approach to the promotion of his music and brand, and in this era of music business, having no form of alacrity in your dealings leaves you in the doldrums.

His social media presence is wonky. His releases and projects are not in our faces like they should be and clearly, some persons in his team have been sleeping.

After the VGMA, Joe has been working; performing across the globe and gracing major shows, but only his team and their friends know about such endeavours. How useful will such information be when you keep them in your socks? Unfathomable!

Last week, under the aegis of Vodafone, the artist launched his Praiz Reloaded Concert with a press conference and astonishingly, the room was filled with officials of Vodafone, the artiste and his team/friends and just a handful of media men.

As expected, the event did not trend on social media and was not covered by major entertainment portals across the country and this is supposed to be our ‘Artiste of the Year’?.

As usual, it was only his friends who were sharing artwork to what is like his self-produced music concert, Praiz Reloaded – a concert similar to what E.L will do for BAR Concert, Sarkodie’s Rapperholic and Shatta Wale’s After The Storm Concert.

Just two days ago, he beat the likes of Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and LilWin to win EMY Awards ‘Best Entertainer of the Year’ and the news is not all over the place.

The hardworking media personnel in the country have been working for all and are willing to work with and for Joe Mettle, but whatever team he has in charge of his PR are lazy, not focused and has no sense of direction.

Joe Mettle should realise that his win is a win for gospel music and all eyes are fixated on his maneuvers and progress. How he navigates his music, brand and business skills is being monitored by many, especially the folks in the gospel domain.

How well he manages his reign as ‘Artiste of the Year’ and a beacon of hope for the genre of gospel is under scrutiny.

He has no excuse to falter: he has good songs, an appealing persona and lovable character. All he has to do is to leave that comfort zone of his, make a move and seek help where necessary.

There’s no comfort zone when it comes to having to protect and defend your kingship as ‘Artiste of the Year’. Lead my brother, lead!

The person who has oversight responsibility over the brand Joe Mettle is Joe Mettle and he must take action. Nobody cares more about that brand than he does. If that brand fails, all team members assigned to work on that brand may find other jobs working for another artiste, which makes it more essential for the artiste to take full control of what happens to that brand.

He is the producer, director, scriptwriter and director of photography for his brand and he must direct how his branding is positioned. He must assume the role of a zealous and ambitious leader who wants to succeed in breaking new frontiers.

He is a good brand and many corporate firms would love to associate with such a brand, help him elevate the music and aid in the soul-winning movement for Christ – but he can’t win if he continues to sit in that comfort zone with such a bewildered team and expect to win. Sit up, guys, sit up!

$15 billion Chinese cash: Quantum of money too huge – ISODEC

$

A Policy Analyst with the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) Dr Steve Manteaw has expressed concern over the $15 billion funding partnership agreement and commitment reached between the Government of Ghana and China, decribing the amount as too huge.

According to him, the quantum of money raises questions about Ghana’s absorptive capacity and ability to make the most efficient use of the resources that are being pledged, given as there has been times that a lot of developmental aids that have been attracted have gone to waste through corruption.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed optimism over a $15 billion funding partnership agreement and commitment reached between the Government of Ghana and China.

The funding partnership with China, Dr. Bawumia explained, is not based on the traditional model of borrowing and aid. The new model, he noted, is based on the bargaining power of the country’s natural resources such the 2.8 billion metric tonnes of iron ore deposits, 960 million metric tonnes of bauxite, 413 million metric tonnes of Manganese and not to mention Gold and Cocoa.

Dr. Bawumiahas said the country needs about $20 billion to embark on a massive infrastructure development and it is only appropriate to develop a financing model that leverages a small fraction of the country’s resources in order to secure the needed funding for the infrastructural development ambition of the government of Ghana.

The Vice President added that the Chinese government has welcomed Ghana’s proposed financing model and has committed $15 billion to support the several projects that government intends to undertake. A further 4 billion dollars partnership agreement will also be signed in due course after a few negotiations are concluded in a month’s time.

But speaking on Starr FM Tuesday, Dr Manteaw who’s also a member of the Public Interest and Accountability Commitee (PIAC) said if Ghana is not able to deal with the available resources in a more efficient manne, then the huge Chinese cash will be pumped into the economy but Ghanains will not realize the full impact of the injection of capital.

He urged government to hold on to borrowing such huge amount of money.

The current government while the party was in opposition and was campiagning for our votes assured that the grass is greener at our feet and that the revenue basket is leaking so badly and so their first priority when voted into power will be to identify the leaks, plug it and conserve enough to finance our national development. I do appreciate the efforts they’ve made so far, a lot is currently ongoing but I think that in the interim they also have a manifesto pledge to fulfill in terms of developmental projects and so they’ll be looking for some intervening financing to deliver on their pledges. While you’ll want to do this, I do not think believe you need this huge volume especially when you’re working at identifying leaks and pluging them to be able to conserve enough to finance your development. So you go for moderate loans in terms of the volume so that while your current mature and begin to yield dividends you’ll be able to generate some from within to complement what you raise from outside.”

Dr Manteaw added: “You should not as a government seek to implement all your manifesto pledges in year one, that for me is a mistake the current government must avoid and therefore needing huge volumes of monies into the economy. That actually raises question over your own absorption capacity. This is not kown for great absorptive country, this country has been very wasteful in the past and so we should go slowly and steadily so that at least we’ll be able to absolve and use resources quite efficiently.”

Fuel sale: Interdict BOST MD – Minority

The Minority in Parliament wants the Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), Alfred Obeng, interdicted over the sale of contaminated fuel to Movenpiina Energy.

According to them, the transaction has resulted in a financial loss of Gh¢14.25 million to the State and the MD of BOST must pay the amount.

Five million litres of fuel product was declared off-spec after going through an in-house technical assessment and a laboratory test by the Tema Oil Refinery It comes after what BOST said was “human error” which led to the contamination of the product which has reportedly resulted in Ȼ7 million loss of revenue to the state.

Addressing a press conference Tuesday, a former Energy Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah said Tema Oil Refinery could have done a good job by first treating the fuel.

What led to the contamination; lack of supervision or the deliberate works of some individuals at the expense of the state? Why didn’t BOST arrange with TOR for the treatment of this particular fuel?” the Minority asked.

He further noted that the transaction is bereft of transparency and integrity since it was shrouded in secrecy.

The claim by BOST that this contaminated fuel was sold at competitive ex-depot price is false and can’t be justified. “When was the competitive bidding process initiated and who were the companies that participated?

He added: “The evidence available confirms that Movenpiina Energy was the only company BOST dealt with in the sale of the contaminated product in a sole source transaction.

Mr. Buah urged government to immediately withdraw the fuel from the market.
